A social activity
Social training is important if students are to be able to listen to reasoning thoughtfully and reflectively. Development of a suitable social environment shows that individuals’ reasoning is highly valued.
The video How to Teach Math as a Social Activity demonstrates a number of strategies that help to develop a classroom environment that supports reasoning by building students' social skills. The strategies include establishing working agreements, setting goals, modelling learning challenges, debriefing and reflecting.
