A learning story

Learning stories can focus on the thinking of one student, a small group or a whole class.

The learning story below was written by a Foundation student.

Yahtzee is a game that is played by one to six players, with five dice. After rolling the dice, players calculate the total of the five faces and then record their scores. You can read the complete rules for Yahtzee and download Yahtzee score sheets for your class to use.

The student had thrown 4 fours and a five, and had to find the total of the dice he had thrown. The learning story tells his reasoning about adding: "Double 8 is 16. Then I counted 17, 18, 19, 20, 21."

Student drawing of the 5 dice faces, explanation that double 8 is 16 then counting on 5 more gives 21.
